Commissioner Wheeler Office releases statement on Local Leaders working to Preserve Land for Green Space
On Thursday, December 11 at 9:52 a.m. the Office of Commissioner Ritch Wheeler released the following press release and statement.
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TX – Commissioner Ritch Wheeler announced that he and representatives from Governor Greg Abbott’s office and General Land Office Commissioner Dawn Buckingham came together with Montgomery County Precinct 3, Harris County Precinct 3 Commissioner Tom Ramsey, and State Representative Steve Toth to explore collaborative options for preserving a large tract of Scarborough Group property as public green space.
The property, previously purchased by Ryko Development, had been slated for the construction of approximately 7000 new homes. The development plans were set in motion prior to Commissioner Wheeler taking office on January 1, 2025.
Since taking office, Commissioner Wheeler has made it a priority to engage with residents, community leaders, and neighboring officials to address widespread concerns about overdevelopment and the loss of open space. He has hosted a Town Hall meeting and attended numerous homeowners’ association meetings to hear directly from constituents and discuss potential solutions.
“Preserving this land for public use and for future generations remains a shared goal across our community,” said Commissioner Wheeler. “By working closely with Governor Abbott’s office, Commissioner Dawn Buckingham, Commissioner Ramsey, and Representative Toth, we are exploring every possible avenue to secure the funding and agreements needed to protect this important natural area.”
If successful, the effort would allow the land to be protected for regional detention, parks, trails, and natural green spaces, ensuring it remains an environmental and recreational asset for Montgomery County residents.
Citizens are encouraged to contact the Governor’s Office at (512) 463-1762 to express your concerns.
