Conroe ISD names Superintendent Lone Finalist
The Conroe ISD Board of Trustees has named Dr. David Vinson as the Lone Finalist for Superintendent of Schools during a special called board meeting on August 27. The announcement comes after a comprehensive three-month search that attracted interest from exceptional leaders across Texas and the nation. Trustees emphasized their unity and confidence in selecting Dr. Vinson, noting that his experience, vision, and proven leadership align with the values and aspirations of the Conroe ISD community.
Dr. Vinson has served as Superintendent of Wylie ISD since 2011, where he established a statewide reputation for academic excellence, fiscal responsibility, and student-centered innovation. Under his leadership, Wylie ISD consistently earned top ratings from the Texas Education Agency including 2025 state accountability ratings of ‘A’ for the district and ‘A’ ratings for every individual campus. He is also credited with expanding dual-credit enrollment by 600%, launching The Wylie Way character education framework, successfully delivering over $700 million in bond programs on time and within budget, and growing the district’s fund balance from $9 million to more than $85 million.

“Throughout this process, we were united in our commitment to find the very best leader for our students, staff, and community,” said Board President Misty Odenweller. “Dr. Vinson not only brings a track record of achievement, but also a heart for students and families. We are confident he will build on Conroe ISD’s strengths and lead us with vision and integrity into the future.”
A proud graduate of Texas Tech University, Dr. Vinson holds a B.B.A. in Management and Marketing, a Master’s in Educational Leadership, and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Character Education. His career in public education began in 1992 as a gifted and talented teacher and coordinator in Idalou ISD. He later served in leadership roles in Frenship ISD and as Superintendent of Floresville ISD before joining Wylie ISD. In addition to his district leadership, Dr. Vinson has been an influential voice statewide, chairing the Student Behavior Management Coalition in 2025 to help secure passage of House Bill 6, a landmark reform in student discipline and a literacy champion serving in the development of the HB3 Reading Academies.
Dr. Vinson and his wife, Cristy, are the proud parents of two children: their son, Cal, a Texas Tech graduate now pursuing graduate studies at Carnegie Mellon University, and their daughter, Kate, a graduate of North Park University in Chicago. An Eagle Scout, Dr. Vinson’s lifelong dedication to service and leadership has been a hallmark of both his personal and professional journey.
In accordance with state law, the Board may officially vote to hire Dr. Vinson as Superintendent of Schools after a 21-day waiting period. The search process was conducted by Texans for Excellence in Education, which guided trustees through a comprehensive and thoughtful superintendent search.
