Conroe’s Rainbow Roller Rink celebrates 70th anniversary with a free skate party
Rainbow Roller Rink, a beloved Conroe institution and one of Texas’s longest-operating family-owned roller rinks, invites the public to a free 70th Anniversary Skate Party celebrating seven decades of roller skating tradition and 40 years in its current Conroe location.
“The free skate party is our way of saying thank you to the community that has kept us rolling for seven decades,” says Jason Keating, who, together with his wife Mary Allen-Keating and her sister Marci, manages the family-run rink.
“We invite everyone to join us on August 6, from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., for a day of free skating with 70s-themed music and plenty of nostalgic fun,” says Jason.

Founded in 1955 by E.L. Pruett in Houston, Rainbow Roller Rink was acquired by Johnnie and Elaine Allen in the 1970s and relocated to Huntsville for nearly a decade. In 1985, the Allens moved the rink to its current Conroe location on Loop 336 East, where it has been a rite of passage for greater Conroe-area youth and families for the past 40 years.
“The Allen family watched generations of skaters grow up on Rainbow’s floor,” says Jason. “We regularly meet parents, grandparents—even great-grandparents—who want their children to experience the same joy they had skating here when they were young.”
Mary and Marci, together with Jason, are the second generation of the Allen family to operate the Conroe rink. Mary and Marci grew up immersed in the world of competitive speed skating and recreational skating in their family’s rink. Mary also went on to compete in roller derby. She and Jason are instrumental in supporting competitive roller sports and community skating activities in our region, while Marci helps direct back-end operations.
Mary and Jason’s daughters, Calliope and Penelope, are both roller derby competitors themselves, and mark the third generation of the Allen family learning the family business and rink management ropes.
Today, Rainbow Roller Rink is home to two roller derby teams, the Space City Slammers youth team and the Conroe Cutthroats adult team. Team Unlimited is Rainbow’s artistic skating team for figure, freestyle and dance skaters. The rink also offers beginner and advanced-level lessons on Saturday mornings for skaters looking to learn to skate or improve their skills.
Rainbow actively partners with school districts for STEM events, and supports homeschool groups and community organizations throughout the region, regularly offering fundraisers, skate nights, and economical party packages for fun-packed birthdays and more.
