March is National Sleep Awareness Month: Take the Quiz to Identify Potential Sleep Problems
If you’ve been having trouble sleeping, you’re not alone. According to the American Sleep Association, 50-70 million adults in the U.S. are affected by a sleep disorder. When sound sleep is repeatedly disrupted it can lead to many health complications over time, including trouble concentrating, anxiety, depression, daytime sleepiness and memory loss.
- What are some kinds of sleep disorders? Sleep apnea, insomnia, sleep movement disorder (ex. restless leg syndrome), sleep walking/talking, narcolepsy and circadian rhythm disorder
- Did you know? Memorial Hermann sleep labs can see children as young as 5 years of age.
- Needs vary. A preschooler benefits from about 10–13 hours of sleep daily, a teenager from 8-10 hours, an adult from 7-9 hours and a senior from 7-8 hours.
- Who do I see if I think I may have a sleep disorder? You can start with a primary care physician like your family doctor or reach out to a specialist like a neurologist or pulmonologist.
