Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office arrests Suspect in FDIC Impersonation Scam, recovers $30,000

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a suspect following an investigation and sting operation related to a phone scam targeting an elderly victim. The scam involved an impersonator posing as an official from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) to steal a significant amount of money.

On Tuesday, December 10, 2025, a resident received a call from a suspect who claimed to be an “FDIC investigator.” The suspect convinced the victim that she was involved in widespread fraud across all her accounts and was able to obtain her sensitive identifying and banking information.

The suspect instructed the victim that $30,000.00 needed to be sent to the FDIC immediately for “safe keeping.” While remaining on the phone with the victim, the suspect directed her to drive to her bank, withdraw the money, place it in a bag, and then hand the bag of cash to an Uber delivery driver, who he claimed was an FBI courier. The victim complied with the demand.

The following day, Wednesday, December 11, 2025, the suspect called the victim again, demanding an additional $30,000.00. At this point, the victim recognized the demands as a potential scam and immediately notified the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.

MCSO Property Detectives and the Organized Crime Division quickly initiated an investigation and sting operation to catch the suspect in the act. This operation led to identifying Witerson Brutus, as the individual who had been scamming the victim. Brutus was taken into custody for Felony Fraud.

Following a search of Brutus’s apartment, the $30,000.00 stolen from the victim the previous day was recovered and returned to her. Detectives have determined there may be other victims and are working to recover additional stolen funds.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office reminds the public not to fall for these scammers. No law enforcement agency or government entity, will ever request you send them money by Uber delivery, any type of courier service, or over the phone. If you receive a suspicious call demanding money or personal information, hang up immediately and contact the corresponding agency through their official published phone number.
