Rolling Thunder to kick off 4th of July Parade with cannon salute
The South County 4th of July Committee is proud to announce that Rolling Thunder, a 3/4 scale replica of an 1841 Mississippi field cannon, will provide a cannon salute to start the 4th of July parade. This historic cannon, known for its powerful and loud blasts, has been a symbol of Texas history and spirit for over 18 years.

Rolling Thunder, built to the specifications of a 6-pounder cannon, is a true Texas native. It has been featured in parades and ceremonial activities across the state, including notable locations such as Washington on the Brazos, the Alamo, and the San Jacinto Battleground. The cannon is fired using a friction primer, making it safer and more efficient.
The Lone Star Volunteers, a dedicated group of trained cannoneers, have been instrumental in preserving and showcasing Texas history through Rolling Thunder. They have participated in numerous events, parades, and firing demonstrations, educating the public about the rich heritage of Texas. “Rolling Thunder is more than just a cannon: it’s a piece of living history”, said Mike Wilson, owner and Cannon Commander. “We are honored to share this piece of history with the community and celebrate our heritage in such a memorable way.”
“We are thrilled to have Rolling Thunder kick off the 49th Annual South County 4th of July Parade with a cannon salute. This historic cannon represents the spirit and history of Texas, and it will be an unforgettable start to our celebration”, said John Powers, President of the South County 4th of July Committee.
The 4th of July parade will be a spectacular event, and the cannon salute by Rolling Thunder will be a highlight that attendees won’t want to miss. Join us in celebrating this historic occasion and witness the power and grandeur of Rolling Thunder.
Rolling Thunder is a 3/4 scale firing replica of an 1841 Mississippi field cannon and is similar in size to the 6-pound Twin Sisters cannons used by the Texians to win their independence from Mexico in the Battle of San Jacinto on April 21, 1836. It has been used to celebrate Texas holidays and important historic dates, demonstrating the rich history and spirit of Texas. The cannon is owned and operated by members of the Lone Star Volunteers, all of whom are members of the Lone Star Chapter #58 of The Sons of the Republic of Texas.
