Summer reading program “Color Our World” June 2nd-July 26th

By  |

Color Our World is this year’s Montgomery County Memorial Library System’s Summer Reading Program theme. All ages, from children and preteens, to teens and adults may participate from June 2nd through July 26th, 2025. The MCMLS’s seven branch libraries across Montgomery County include free events during the eight-week program, and a reading challenge component. Reading goals are self-paced with rewards to foster literacy.

“The Summer Reading Program is an opportunity for our community to participate in enriching and entertaining programs while enhancing literacy,” said Dr. Janna Hoglund, Library Director for MCMLS. “It gives us a chance to showcase our libraries and welcome everyone to join in.”

Children, teens and adults can choose to read by books or minutes. Reading to each other, listening to audiobooks, and reading articles, newspapers and e-books counts too. Participants may register on the Reader Zone app in May, but cannot begin reading or logging titles until June 2nd. They may also choose to pick up a reading log at their local branch. Once reading goals are reached, participants can show their completion reading logs to their home Branch, and earn their reward for reading.

Registering for reading is not required to attend events. All events are free and open to the public. Some may require preregistration due to limited space or supplies. The library will be active with special events for children, teens and adults throughout the weeks, including art, crafts, games, movies, book clubs, storytellers and magicians, wildlife, coding and scavenger hunts, henna art, knitting, and pizza parties.

Events and supplies are made available through County-funding and Friends of the Library groups. In-kind donations from sponsors also support literacy programming for the summer. The Montgomery County Commissioners and Judge, along with the Libraries’ nonprofit Friends groups support the reading program, events and collections. Artwork for the theme is provided by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission, and the Collaborative Summer Library Program.

More information and Summer Library events may be found on our website at www.countylibrary.org or by picking up a local branch calendar at one of the service desks. Founded in 1948, the MCMLS celebrates literacy all year long through fun, educational programs for children, teens, and adults, and by the more than 2.5 million items circulated. Since then, it has grown to serve nearly 400,000 Library patrons and cardholders in seven branches Countywide. For more information, go to www.countylibrary.org.
