Water Lantern Festival and Debut of ‘As Water Falls’ Art Installation at City Place

By  |

Fall fun arrives at north Houston’s City Place in October, where an exciting lineup of family-friendly activities will take place on and around the community’s central Plaza at 1250 Lake Plaza Drive, Spring, TX 77389.

Water Lantern Festival makes its sparkling seasonal return to City Place on October 5 from 4:30-8:30 pm. A community favorite, the event showcases food trucks, live music and the opportunity for attendees to design and send off their own LED candle-lit lanterns into picturesque City Place Park’s main pond, where they will float among thousands of others as the sun sets. While free to watch, tickets to participate are available via https://www.waterlanternfestival.com/houston.php.

The evening also serves as the launch of City Place’s newest temporary art installation, “As Water Falls.” Designed by Montreal-based digital art studio Iregular, the multi-faceted piece functions at the intersection of art and technology as a large-scale, virtual waterfall with an accompanied soundscape. Reconceived for its exhibition at City Place, this is the first time “As Water Falls” will be realized in a cube format. Four ever-changing LED displays, each interactive by touch, allow participants to alter the digital cascades and sounds in an enticing reminder that nature is alive and continuously evolving. The immersive pop up is also the first international piece to debut as part of City Place’s ongoing partnership with Weingarten Art Group. Located in the Meadow, across the central pond from The Plaza, “As Water Falls” open to the public and free of charge daily from 7 am until 10 pm October 5 through November 10. The piece is best experienced after sunset.

As a new addition to the City Place programming calendar, the Houston Humane Society Wildlife Center will host complimentary workshops in The Plaza that teach children how to preserve, protect and coexist with Houston’s urban wildlife. Each session also includes a surprise animal visit. The interactive and engaging programs will take place October 6 and 26, with two one-hour sessions starting at 9:30 and 10:45 am.
