YMCA of Greater Houston marks 21 years of supporting local youth through YMCA Operation Backpack

By  |

The YMCA of Greater Houston has kicked off its 21st annual YMCA Operation Backpack initiative, one of the state’s largest back-to-school drives. From July 8–Aug. 1, the YMCA of Greater Houston will collect and distribute more than 30,000 backpacks filled with school supplies and provide access to YMCA after-school programs. By equipping local youth with essential tools and opportunities, YMCAOperation Backpack is helping students return to the 2025-2026 school year confident, prepared and ready to learn.

“For 21 years, we’ve been filling a critical need across the Greater Houston area as we’ve focused on providing each child with a sense of hope for a brighter future,” said Stephen Ives, president and CEO, YMCA of Greater Houston. “Our mission goes a step beyond providing backpacks. We’re committed to creating not just physical space, but also opportunities for developmental and emotional well-being for people who truly need them most. YMCA Operation Backpack is possible because of the incredible support from Houstonians, and together we’re building a community where everyone has the chance to thrive.”

According to the Texas Education Agency (TEA), 17 of the 28 Greater Houston-area school districts experienced an increase in economically disadvantaged students between 2020 and 2025, underscoring the critical need for YMCA Operation Backpack. With generous support from H-E-B, which is providing 30,000 school supply kits, and a continued partnership with Radar Promotions, YMCA Operation Backpack aims to distribute backpacks and school supplies to students across the Houston area.

Houstonians can help make a positive impact on the lives of students from July 8-Aug. 1 by doing any of the following:

  • Visit your local YMCA and drop off a new backpack
  • Donate online at ymcaoperationbackpack.org
  • Share this campaign with family and friends!

The YMCA is uniquely positioned to meet community needs, empowering youth, building healthier families and fostering more inclusive communities. Funds raised during YMCA Operation Backpack will go directly towards providing access for youth to attend YMCA after-school programs, giving students important academic support. Youth Development programs at the Y, including Out of School Time, Early Care, Teens, and Outreach, remain a core pillar of the organization. Through its initiatives like YMCA Operation Backpack, the nonprofit remains a cornerstone of hope, connection, and opportunity for all.
