The Woodlands Township hosted the 47th annual Arbor Day Tree Giveaway on Saturday, January 28, 2023 from 9 a.m. to noon at Rob Fleming Park.

Despite the threat of rain, residents came out to support one of the longest-standing community traditions in The Woodlands, select free seedlings (twelve varieties of native canopy and understory trees!), and talk with tree, bug, and environmental experts.

Canopy trees comprise the upper layer of the forest and typically reach heights of 40 to 90 feet, such as American Sycamore, Chinkapin Oak, Overcup Oak, Chicksaw Plum, Green Ash and Loblolly Pine. Understory trees range from 8 to 20 feet and are generally more shade tolerant, including Texas Redbud, Possumhaw Holly, Roughleaf Dogwood, Texas Persimmon, Spicebush and Witch Hazel.

Since 1977, more than 1.5 million seedlings have been distributed. Residents are encouraged to plant each tree seedling on residential property, in community open space reserves, and in forest preserves. All of the native seedlings benefit local wildlife.Flowering varieties provide nectar for bees, butterflies and other pollinators. Berry producing trees offer small mammals and birds a source of food. All are critical hosts for beneficial insects.

The 2023 event was produced by The Woodlands Township Environmental Services Department with support from Chevron-Phillips Chemical, Centerpoint Energy, The Woodlands GREEN and Woodlands Water Agency.
