CONROE ISD BOARD OF TRUSTEES – 2022 CANDIDATE

Ashley Fehrle is running for Conroe ISD Board of Trustees Position 1.

Ashley Fehrle

1. Share about yourself and your background.

I grew up in Montgomery County and graduated from Conroe High School. I obtained my B.A. in Social Work from Baylor University, which included internships with Communities in Schools and Child Protective Services in Waco. After graduation, I returned to Montgomery County and worked as a medical hospice social worker. I also earned a Master’s in Social Work from the University of Houston with internships at The Community Clinic and the Montgomery County Women’s Center in the Woodlands. My husband is also a graduate of CISD and owns a second-generation family business in Spring. I left my vocation to raise my family but have maintained my social work license and stayed current with continuing education. I have been heavily involved in the schools volunteering in various ways, including PTO President for multiple terms and multiple schools. I serve as Philanthropy Liaison for National Charity League, Texas Laurels chapter, and am currently a CASA advocate in Montgomery County. My work with CISD includes serving on the District Level Decision Making & Planning Committee, and I am a volunteer with Project Mentor, a mentor program for at-risk students in the district.

2. What motivates you to run for the Conroe ISD Board of Trustees?

I am running for school board now for the same reason I ran two years ago: to protect the quality of education in CISD and to advocate for all students, teachers, & parents.

3. What are five things that you want voters to know about you (personal, points, views, experience, etc.)?

  1. I am a product of CISD and a parent with children who currently attend CISD schools
  2. My proven years-long PTO leadership and community service have reinforced my commitment as an advocate for all families, especially the challenged and voiceless.
  3. I have advocated for dyslexia services locally and at the state level. I will relentlessly seek a level playing field for every child.
  4. My education in social work and experience as a CASA advocate for Montgomery County’s children have prepared me well for this role.
  5. I am committed to improving rather than disengaging from our public school system.

4. If elected, what would your top 3 priorities be?

  1. School Safety. I support the district’s decision to implement the Governor’s recommendations following the events in Uvalde, including additional cameras, fencing, and procedural measures. CISD has the 3rd largest police force in Montgomery County, with highly skilled officers current in campus security (including active shooter) training. Our first priority should be to have a police presence at each of our schools at all times. The officers could develop friendly relationships with staff, parents, and children without the cold implementation of prison-like lockdown measures – including, for example, current requirements that all interior doors be locked at all times, creating unnecessary disruption and anxiety.
  2. Leveling the Educational Playing Field. All students deserve our investment in their success by creating an environment conducive to their needs. This includes the full spectrum from special education with identified learning disabilities to the gifted and talented. We must ensure that the most recent Dyslexia handbook guidelines are being followed to swiftly identify students and get them the services needed to succeed, which will, in turn, improve educational outcomes.
  3. Teacher Recruiting and Retention. The most pressing issue our district’s teachers face is the infringement on their conference period, leaving them insufficient time to plan & prepare for their lessons. In addition, extra duties were added for tutoring, lunch duty, car line duty, and other before and after school duties. Teachers have had to adjust to new legislation over the last several years that includes additional training that must be completed on their own time. Our teachers went into the profession because they are passionate about educating and teaching students, and they are performing well. We need to minimize administrative burdens to enable them to focus on the classroom

5. Would you like to share any other words or message?

I am the only one in my race who is a product of CISD and a parent to children currently attending CISD schools. My aspirations are and have always been singularly focused on advocacy for our children and the parents and teachers who educate them. My commitment is not new. I have been intricately invested in our schools and CISD for many years, and my point of view is well-informed. I am the right choice for CISD Position 1.
