“As a lived experience expert, it is of the utmost importance to me to educate others about the effects that trauma has on both the brain and the body. Having a working knowledge of this is integral to the healing process,” Harwell said. “While I have worked with Hands of Justice for many years, I am most excited about my increased capacity to drive policy that supports survivors on their journey to become Overcomers.”

Her powerful story is featured in the first edition of When Silence Ends, a collection of stories by Overcomers of Human Trafficking. She is also a certified Life Coach and Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) Practitioner. Currently on staff at Mercy House Global, Megan has been affiliated with Hands of Justice for the past four years, serving in various capacities, including as a Peer Support Specialist, where she facilitates support groups for survivors.

Harwell views her new role on the Board of Directors as a sacred opportunity to further the mission of HOJ. She reflects on this step with gratitude and faith:

“Serving on the board will allow me to glorify God by honoring the mandate of Luke 4:18, ‘…he has appointed me to proclaim freedom for the captives and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free,” she said.

As an Overcomer, Harwell said that HOJ played a significant role in her healing journey, empowering her to do the same for others.

“Serving in the Survivor position on the board will enable me to use my lived experience to assist the board as a whole in understanding the needs of survivors better,” Harwell said.

Hands of Justice is honored to have Megan Harwell join its leadership team as the organization continues to make strides in supporting survivors, educating the community, and advocating for change.
