Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital celebrates breast cancer survivors during BRA Day
Throughout October, communities across the country embraced pink to raise awareness for breast cancer and the importance of early detection – but awareness is just the beginning.
As the month concluded, Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital’s breast reconstruction team celebrated Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) Day, highlighting the role reconstruction can play in helping patients move forward after breast cancer treatment.
The observance took place near the end of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, symbolizing one of the final steps in a patient’s journey from diagnosis and treatment to healing and recovery.
“Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day is an opportunity to celebrate and honor our patients, recognize their strength and journeys, and educate our community about breast reconstruction options,” Dr. Steven Gordon, plastic and reconstructive surgeon at Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital said. “Our first priority is to eradicate breast cancer, and our secondary goal is to restore form and femininity to help patients feel more like themselves again.”
The celebration was held at a local restaurant where patients, survivors and loved ones could gather to share stories and connect over food, pink colored beverages, breast reconstruction-related vendor pop-ups and festive photo opportunities.
“A breast cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming, but Houston Methodist is here to help guide patients through this process from diagnosis through survivorship,” Gordon said.
