Memorial Hermann reminds you to make Mammograms part of your routine
At Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center, the team recently “pinked out” to celebrate National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and highlight the life-changing power of early detection. October is a warm reminder of how essential mammograms are to your wellness routine. Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women, with one in eight women in the U.S. expected to receive a diagnosis in her lifetime. Since many women diagnosed have no family history of the disease, routine screenings are vital for everyone.

Why Mammograms Matter
Mammograms are the single most effective tool to detect breast cancer early. Finding cancer before you can feel a lump allows for more treatment options and enhances the likelihood of a successful outcome .
- The Recommendation: The American College of Radiology recommends annual screening mammograms for women starting at age 40 . If you have a higher risk due to family history, your health care provider may suggest starting sooner .
- Stay Aware: Between your annual visits, stay familiar with how your breasts look and feel. Contact your health care provider immediately if you notice changes like lumps, persistent pain, nipple changes or swelling under your arm .
Easy Steps to Prepare
Feeling a little nervous before your mammogram is completely normal, especially if it is your first time . These simple tips can help your appointment go smoothly:
- Timing is Key: Schedule your visit one to two weeks after your period when breasts are less tender.
- Skip the Products: Avoid deodorant, lotions, powders and perfumes on your chest or underarms on the day of your appointment. These products can show up as spots and interfere with your images.
- Dress Comfortably: Wear a two-piece outfit so you only have to remove your top. We will provide a comfortable gown for you to wear.
- Travel Light: Leave jewelry at home and tie long hair back.
- Speak Up: Let your imaging technologist know if you are breastfeeding, have breast implants or have any current breast concerns .
