Nominations for MLK Drum Major Award accepted until January 12
The Drum Major Award, an honor given annually to outstanding individuals nationwide, will be presented on January 15, 2018 in connection with the Thirtieth Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Celebration.
Hosted by Impact Church in The Woodlands, the award will be presented during ceremonies on Monday, January 15, at 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m., as part of the national observance of the commemoration held at The Woodlands United Methodist Church.
The title of the award is derived from a sermon given by Dr. King in February 1968, in which he referred to a 20th century notion of greatness – the innate human need for recognition, the desire for distinction – calling this impulse the Drum Major instinct. Dr. King shared, “If you want to say that I was a Drum Major, say that I was a Drum Major for justice; say that I was a Drum Major for peace; I was a Drum Major for righteousness.”
The Drum Major Award to be presented will recognize a woman, man, business, or organization in Montgomery County whose life or work best exemplify the ideals of being a “Drum Major.”
Nominations are being accepted through January 12, 2018. Send all nominations to Impact Church, 5401 Shadowbend Place, The Woodlands, TX 77381 or email Myrna Irons at gmirons@sbcglobal.net.
