Montgomery County increases DWI Enforcement Efforts during Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo

By  |

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo kicks off on February 22, 2024, with the World Championship Bar-B-Que Contest and continues through March 17, 2024, at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas. The Houston Rodeo attracts millions annually, including many from Montgomery County and the surrounding areas. In addition to the millions of people who attend, vendors sell millions of dollars’ worth of alcohol during the three-week-long event.

Accordingly, Montgomery County law enforcement will increase DWI enforcement efforts during the rodeo season. Law enforcement will be out looking for impaired drivers, including those who may be coming back into the county from the Rodeo. The Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office will also conduct increased No Refusal blood draw operations to assist law enforcement with obtaining blood samples from those arrested for driving while intoxicated.

When planning to attend the Houston Rodeo, preparing for how you will get home safely is critically important. Every individual is responsible for knowing when they should or should not drive. The Rodeo should be an enjoyable time for all, but for your safety and that of others, make sure you have a sober ride home.

Rideshare apps like Uber and Lyft mean there is always a sober driver available. And whatever their costs, those costs are far less expensive than being charged with a DWI.

Vehicular Crimes Chief Taylor Vanegas stated, “In 2023, Montgomery County saw 176 DWI-related offenses during the Rodeo. Although not all of those came from the Rodeo, we want those numbers to go down this year. We want people to go to the Rodeo and enjoy themselves, but we also want folks to make it home safely. We encourage everyone to plan ahead for a safe and sober ride.”
