Residents of all ages had fun learning about safety at Emergency Preparedness

By  |

The Woodlands Township Emergency Preparedness event on Saturday, April 29, 2023, attracted many families from around The Woodlands who were eager to get involved and learn how to prepare for a hurricane or other emergency. This annual event, produced by The Woodlands Township Neighborhood Watch and presenting sponsor CenterPoint, was a fun learning experience for all ages.

Disaster preparedness experts and public safety personnel were there to answer questions and provide emergency resources, supply kits, and educational handouts. Among the participants and sponsors were The Woodlands Fire Department, Texas A&M Fire Service, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Montgomery County Hospital District EMS, CenterPoint and Entergy utility providers, McCormick Fire, The National Weather Service, Montgomery County Search and Rescue, local community organizations and agencies. It was also a great opportunity for two local brownie troops in attendance to earn badges.

Participants were able to make their own hurricane, tornado, snowstorm, first aid kit, learn hands-only CPR and more.  A few lucky winners took home great raffle prizes, including a generator from Lowes!

Dan Reilly, from The National Weather Service, gave us a look into the 2023 hurricane season and additional storm information and shared tips on how to prepare for a natural disaster such as a hurricane.

CenterPoint shared information on their role in an emergency and offered safety tips for working with utilities.

McCormick Fire were on-site to certify residents’ fire extinguishers and ensure that they pass the test (pull, aim, squeeze and sweep). They also gave residents tips on placement and how to care for the extinguisher.

This family-friendly event gave young residents a chance to learn about emergency preparedness in a fun and interactive way. Children participated in hands-on activities, met mascots Smokey the Bear and McGruff the Crime Dog and explored public safety vehicles.

The Township thanks all the sponsors who helped make the event possible and encourages all residents and businesses in The Woodlands to stay informed and prepared for any kind of emergency.
