Riva Row Boat House Adds Pedal Kayaks to Rental Options

By  |

THE WOODLANDS, TX – Just in time for Father’s Day, The Woodlands Township will begin offering single and tandem (or double) pedal kayaks as new and exciting rental options at Riva Row Boat House on Saturday, June 20, 2020. Pedal kayaks are being added to the many rental options already available at Riva Row including standard/paddle-powered single and tandem (or double) kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, swan pedal boats, and water bikes.

These unique additions to The Woodlands Waterway will be positioned in the lower level of the waterway along with our other kayaks and paddleboards. Riders looking for a new type of kayak adventure will be able to explore The Woodlands Waterway lower canal and Lake Woodlands – now without having to paddle!

The first pedal-powered kayaks offered in the 11-year history of Riva Row Boat House are the “Mirage Compass” and “Mirage Compass Duo” model kayaks, (https://www.hobie.com/xe/en/kayaks/), manufactured by Hobie, Inc. They are built for one or two riders, respectively. The Township currently has three (3) of the single models and five (5) tandem or “duo” models, with more on the way.

Single Pedal Kayaks can be rented for just $25/hour, and Tandem Pedal Kayaks for $30/hour. Other rental options at Riva Row Boat House will continue to include: standard single kayaks ($15/hour), standard tandem kayaks ($20/hour), stand-up paddleboards ($20/hour), swan pedal boats ($25/hour), and water bikes ($25/hour). Prices listed here are for the first hour; additional hours for any boat are just $5 each. Lifejackets and paddles are always included in every rental – including an ‘emergency’ paddle for the pedal kayaks. Riva Row Boat House is currently open from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with the last boat going out at 7:00 p.m. Riva Row Boat House is closed on Wednesdays.

Age limits and rules for use of the pedal kayaks are similar to all other kayaks in the Riva Row Boat House fleet. Ages 9 and under must be joined in the same boat by an adult. Ages 10 to 15 can ride with parent or guardian accompanying them out on the water in a nearby boat. Ages 16 and up can venture out alone or with friends if their liability waiver has been previously signed by a parent. Children under 42” tall can ride along with an adult as an additional guest (i.e. second person on a single kayak, or third person on a tandem) as long as they wear a lifejacket at all times. Pets are not currently allowed on the pedal kayaks unless they are documented service animals.

Pedal kayaks are extremely stable, easy to navigate and are great for those with limited upper body strength or mobility; those looking for a lower body exercise; and are truly ideal for anyone going fishing as they leave your hands completely free to wrestle your catch! (Keep in mind that Lake Woodlands is a catch-and-release lake unless you have a state-issued fishing permit.)

During Phase III of The Governor’s Plan to Open Texas, Riva Row Boat House is operating by walk-ups only, although advance reservations can be taken for large groups on weekdays. Certain protective measures have been put in place to allow for safe social distancing and to protect both customers and staff from the spread of COVID-19. These procedures include online completion of liability waivers; increased cleanings of surfaces and equipment before and after each use; physical barriers; credit/debit only for all payments (no cash or checks accepted); and staff are currently not able to physically help customers into the boats – verbal cues and supervision are provided.
