  • THE LEUKEMIA & LYMPHOMA SOCIETY “LIGHT THE NIGHT® WALK” CHAIRS ANNOUNCED Carman & Melton from The Howard Hughes Corporation® Co-Chair Light the Night THE WOODLANDS, TX – June 13, 2018 – Jim Carman, Vice President, Master Planned Communities (MPC) Commercial Development, and Heath Melton, Vice President MPC Residential Development of The Howard Hughes Corporation® (NYSE: HHC) have been named as the corporate walk co-chairs of the 2018 Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Light The Night Walk in Montgomery County. The Walk will be held on Sunday, October 14 at Town Green Park in The Woodlands. Light The Night is an inspirational community campaign, which raises awareness and funding for groundbreaking research and treatment options to eliminate cancer. Light The Night brings light to the darkness of cancer through hope, research and support for patients, families, friends, doctors, nurses, researchers, colleagues and caregivers. Participants literally light the night by carrying illuminated lanterns – white for survivors, red for supporters and gold to remember those who have lost their battle – to honor lives touched by blood cancer. As co-chairs, Carman and Melton will lead the effort in accelerating corporate support and driving revenue growth for Light The Night to support LLS’s ultimate goal of creating a world without blood cancer. In 2017, Carman and Melton both finished in the Top 25 of all Executive Challengers (those committed to raising $5,000 or more) in the Nation. “The Howard Hughes Corporation is committed to improving the communities we serve,” said Carman. “Light The Night is a great way to rally our communities and our employees to help make cures possible. Heath and I are honored to serve as the co-chairs for this important event. We look forward to working with businesses and community leaders across Montgomery County to bring light to those affected by cancer.” Proceeds from corporate and individual contributions help to find cures and better therapies for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and to provide information, education and financial support for patients and their families. Last year, the Montgomery County event surpassed their $1 million goal for the first time in their 13-year history. With over 5,000 participants, the community raised an incredible $1.15 million for the LLS Mission. Montgomery County Light The Night ranked #13 in revenue amongst 150 Walks across the nation. The Howard Hughes Corporation finished as the top ranked team in Montgomery County in 2017, raising over $114,000, an amount that Carman and Melton expect to exceed in 2018. “When a loved one hears the words ‘you have cancer,’ it is one of the darkest moments in your life,” said Breanna Challicombe, LLS Campaign Director. “Through the leadership of Jim and Heath, we will bring light to the darkness of cancer, and The Howard Hughes Corporation will power cancer cures.” Thanks to participation in these powerful walks, LLS has been able to invest more than $1.2 billion in research to advance breakthrough cancer treatments that are saving lives today. LLS distributed over $12 million in research funding to the Texas Medical Center last fiscal year, as well as provided 876 local patients throughout the Texas Gulf Coast area with over $1.2 million in co-pay assistance. Despite advances in survival rates, half of blood cancer patients do not survive. More funding is needed to advance research and ensure access to treatments for all patients.
