The Woodlands Arts Council unveils “The Fine Art of Craft” Exhibition
The Woodlands Arts Council (TWAC) is excited to announce the opening of “The Fine Art of Craft” on October 1st, 2024, featuring the masterful work of Robert L. Straight. The exhibition serves as a prelude to the highly anticipated Texas Fine Craft Show (November 1, 2, & 3, 2024 at The Westin The Woodlands) and highlights the seamless fusion of art and craft in contemporary creative expression. The public is invited to an Opening Reception on October 4, 2024, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the TWAC exhibition space.
Curated by Annette Palmer, this thoughtfully designed exhibition brings to light the blurred lines between functionality and artistry. Robert L. Straight’s extraordinary body of work showcases a harmonious blend of skill, talent, and creativity, demonstrating the beauty of craftsmanship in a modern context.
“This exhibition explores the intersection of art and craft. It’s always thrilling to see what Robert L. Straight produces, as he creates art with exceptional craftsmanship,” says Palmer. “The Fine Art of Craft” offers a delightful mix of whimsical and thoughtful creations, including turned wood inlaid with vibrant elements, fused glass, and metalworks, alongside playful silkscreen prints and lithographs—a true testament to the power of imagination.”
Now in his 82nd year, Robert L. Straight continues to create work that blends artistry with craftsmanship. Having earned his MFA from the Glassell School of Art in 2016, he has spent over five decades mastering various mediums. His creations, which often integrate wood, glass, and metal, balance functional design with artistic expression.
“I often transition between mediums,” says Straight. “One moment, I may be working with wood or glass, and the next, I’ll introduce a steel element into the mix. Some pieces may embody a natural theme, while others could be entirely abstract. My versatility infuses my work with vibrancy and life.”
Jenny Carattini-Wright, Executive Director and CEO of The Woodlands Arts Council, adds, “We are delighted to feature Robert L. Straight in this exceptional exhibition. His work embodies a remarkable fusion of artistry and craftsmanship, which is an essential component of the Texas Fine Craft Show, our inaugural indoor boutique shopping experience. This event, showcasing exquisite examples of fine craft, will take place on November 1, 2 & 3, 2024, at The Westin The Woodlands.” Tickets are available online only: https://www.thewoodlandsartscouncil.org/p/buytickets
