The Woodlands Concert Band Announces Winners of 5th Annual Student Solo Contest

THE WOODLANDS, TX – The Woodlands Concert Band is proud to announce the winners of our 5th Annual Student Solo Contest. The contest, held each spring, draws students from schools in Montgomery, Harris, and Fort Bend Counties. Students submit video recordings for their preliminary audition.

A panel of judges selects five semi-finalists who then perform a live audition. Judges select first, second, and third place winners. Each winner receives a cash prize and the opportunity to perform with the band at our June 25 concert at Christ Church Methodist, 6363 Research Forest Dr. The Woodlands, Texas 77381.




3rd place winner and receiving $300, Molly Koglin, is a rising senior at Dulles High School in Fort Bend ISD and began playing clarinet in 6th grade. Molly is the student of Chester Rowell. In 2023, Molly was placed in the TMEA All-State Symphonic Band. Molly is one of the senior drum majors for the Dulles High School Marching Band under the direction of Arnel Davrit, Spencer Clayton, and Zachary Guiterez.

Katherine Hwang, our 2nd place winner, receiving $500, is a rising junior at Dulles High School in Fort Bend ISD. Katherine began playing clarinet in the fourth grade. She became the student of Roman Cisneros in the sixth grade with whom she continues to study. Katherine is a 4-year region band member, 2-year Texas Music Educator’s Association All-State Symphony orchestra member and was a member of the Symphony Orchestra of the Houston Youth Symphony for the 2022-2023 season. Katherine received an Honorable Mention in the 2021 Houston International Music Competition. Katherine plays in the Dulles High School Honor Band under the direction of Arnel Davrit.

Winning first place and receiving a $1000 prize is Dalton Schultz. Dalton is a rising senior at Bridgeland High School in Cypress-Fairbanks ISD. Dalton began playing clarinet in 6th grade while attending Salyards Middle School. In 7th and 8th grade, Dalton was selected to the region band placing 4th chair in 8th grade. In high school, Dalton was selected to the Texas Music Educator’s Association (TMEA) All-State Symphonic Band in 10th and 11th grade. Dalton was the principal clarinet in the Region Orchestra in 11th grade. Dalton is currently the principal clarinet for the Bridgeland High School Band and Symphony Orchestra. The Bridgeland Symphony Orchestra has been invited to attend the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, Illinois in December 2023. Dalton is the student of Mark Edenfield.
