The Woodlands residents can volunteer to clean up the community in GreenUp: Fall Sweep this October
Whether you choose to clean up once during this month or fit it into your daily activities, your dedication matters. Join The Woodlands Township for GreenUp: Fall Sweep during the month of October 2024!
Across the state of Texas last year, more than 10,000 volunteers helped remove 900,000 pounds of trash and recycling from greenspaces! We need your help to continue this incredible effort in ensuring our recreational and natural spaces remain clean and green for people and critters alike.
GreenUp: Fall Sweep is a self-guided volunteer opportunity for families, organizations, businesses, schools or individuals to target litter along pathways, waterways and natural areas. Residents are encouraged to join the cleanup at any time during the month of October. No registration is required, but data submission following your cleanup is encouraged. For more information, please visit www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/fallsweep.
How Fall Sweep Works
- Gather your family and ready your gloves, bags and outdoor gear for a day of community beautification. Start and end times are up to you. Trash grabbers, bags, gloves, and vests are available for loan by appointment only. Please call 281-210-3800 at least 2 business days in advance to borrow equipment.
- Choose a location in the community in need of litter cleanup. Parks, pathways and green spaces near businesses always need cleaning. Pay attention to tree lines to spot litter hiding under leaves and brush.
- Cleanup litter along pathways and in the tree lines. Report large or hazardous items to the Township through the 311 App or by calling 281-210-3800 Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
- Dispose of full bags at home or in a park trash can. Tie your trash bags tightly to protect sanitation workers. Avoid overstuffing park trash cans.
- Share your success by submitting a litter cleanup report with your estimated litter totals and cleanup photos!
Safety
- Wear protective gear – Use gloves when picking up trash.
- Be prepared for the elements – Long pants, closed-toe shoes, hats, sunscreen, mosquito repellent, and a reusable water bottle are recommended.
- Sanitize when you’re done – Immediately wash your hands with soap and water or hand sanitizer after collecting litter.
- Be aware of wildlife – Avoid all snakes and wildlife. Observe from a distance and irritate tall grass or bushes with a stick before entering to scare off wildlife.
- Know poisonous plants and avoid them – Poison ivy is common along pathways and inside tree lines. Touching leaves and roots can cause a painful rash. Remember leaves of three, leave it be!
