The Woodlands Township’s Safe at Home Program for Preteens to build safety skills
As children gain independence and begin spending short periods of time at home on their own, knowing how to stay safe and make smart decisions becomes increasingly important. The Woodlands Township invites families to participate in the Safe@Home Program, a free educational course for residents designed to help students in grades 4 through 6 develop essential safety skills and confidence when home alone.
Safe@Home by Safe Sitter® prepares students to recognize and prevent unsafe situations, practice safe habits and respond appropriately to emergencies. Through engaging discussions and interactive activities, participants learn indoor, outdoor, online and personal safety skills while gaining practical knowledge for handling unexpected situations such as power outages, severe weather, minor injuries and illnesses.
The Woodlands Township will offer four free Safe@Home classes this summer:
- Thursday, June 11, 2026 | 10 a.m. to noon | The Woodlands Township Townhall
- Tuesday, June 16, 2026 | 6 to 8 p.m. | The Woodlands Township Townhall
- Saturday, July 18, 2026 | 10 a.m. to noon | Bear Branch Recreation Center
- Saturday, July 25, 2026 | 10 a.m. to noon | Rob Fleming Recreation Center
Class sizes are limited to approximately 15 to 20 students, and registration is required. Early registration is encouraged, as space is limited.

During the approximately 90-minute program, students receive a Safe@Home workbook to keep and use throughout the course. Instructors guide participants through a multimedia presentation while encouraging group discussion and hands-on learning. Interactive activities help reinforce key concepts and give students opportunities to apply what they have learned.
Students are also introduced to the Safe Sitter® First Aid Chart, which teaches a simple system for assessing and responding to common injuries and illnesses. When available, guest presenters from local public safety organizations, including the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and The Woodlands Fire Department, may join the program to share additional safety insights and expertise.
