Township meets, honors Dr. Head’s retirement, First Responders Day, and more

THE WOODLANDS, TX – The Woodlands Township Board of Directors held a regular meeting on Wednesday, August 23, 2023. The Board reviewed and discussed topics including a proclamation recognizing Dr. Stephen C. Head on his 40-year career as Chancellor of Lone Star College, and read proclamations for First Responders Day and Patriot Day.

The Board opened the meeting with a proclamation recognizing Stephen C. Head, Ph.D., on his retirement as Chancellor of Lone Star College. Dr. Head began his career with Lone Star College in 1983 and became the fourth chancellor of Lone Star College in 2014. The Board of Directors expressed their appreciation to Dr. Head and his contributions to The Woodlands as an active community member serving on several local, state and national organizations, supporting the community college mission. The proclamation proclaimed August 23, 2023, as Stephen C. Head, Ph.D., Day in The Woodlands, Texas.

Two additional proclamations were read recognizing September 11, 2023, as First Responders Day and Patriots Day. Both proclamations recognize, remember, and honor the events that occurred on September 11, 2001. On Monday, September 11, 2023, a ceremony will be held at The Woodlands Central Fire Station to honor the brave men and women who tragically lost their lives during the terrorist attacks. The ceremony will begin at 7:30 a.m. in front of the fire station located at 9951 Grogan’s Mill Rd, The Woodlands, TX. The public is invited to attend.    

On the Regular Agenda, the Board accepted a report given by Township Chief Operating Officer Chris Nunes, highlighting Township efforts in the aftermath of the June 21, 2021 storm. The severe windstorm resulted in wind gusts up to 95 miles per hour and caused significant damage to homes, businesses, parks and the community’s forest. Visit The Woodlands President Nick Wolda updated the Board of Directors on the 50th Anniversary Celebration planning efforts. The Woodlands will celebrate its 50th Anniversary on October 19, 2024, and will kick off the celebrations in October 2023. The Board of Directors approved an expenditure to purchase and install 50th Anniversary light pole banners that will be strategically placed on light poles throughout the Township. Additional celebration activities will include a press event, promotional merchandise, a 50th Anniversary photo book and a large event to be held on the 50th anniversary date: October 19, 2024. Read and view the full presentation online.       

The Board of Directors approved an interlocal agreement with Montgomery County related to improvements in the road rights-of-way, conditioned upon the Montgomery County Commissioners Court approval of a proposed first amendment to the agreement.

On the Consent Agenda, which consists of routine housekeeping items that do not require Board discussion, the Board received administrative reports for law enforcement and community policing efforts for July 2023. They also approved the purchase of a replacement vehicle for a Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office detective with Children’s Safe Harbor and approved a Shared Access and Maintenance Agreement with The Woodlands Land Development Company (TWLDC) for the Gold Lot along The Woodlands Waterway. Finally, on the Consent Agenda, the Board accepted revisions to the policies pertaining to The Woodlands Express Park and Ride and The Woodlands Trolley.

Members of the public were able to address the Board at the beginning of the meeting.
