By  |

On September 24, 2024, a 15-year-old Willis I.S.D. student was charged after making a threatening comment while walking with friends down the school hallway. The comment, “Shoot this place up,” was overheard by another student and a school official, resulting in Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office’s SRO Deputies and school administration conducting an investigation. The student has been charged with a Class A misdemeanor in accordance with Texas Education Code 37.125 – Exhibition, Use, or Threat of Exhibition or Use of Firearms. This incident serves as a stark and clear warning: any comment or threat made toward public schools, whether intended as a joke or not, will be met with the full force of the law.

The safety and security of students, staff, and visitors at Willis I.S.D. are paramount. In today’s climate, schools cannot afford to dismiss any threat, no matter how seemingly insignificant. Even comments made in passing or as a so-called “joke” can have severe legal and financial consequences for those involved. Juvenile offenders could face criminal charges, permanent records, and other repercussions that can impact their lives forever. We strongly encourage all parents and guardians to have a serious conversation with their children about the gravity of making threats, regardless of the intent. Emphasize that threats to schools are not jokes and can have devastating, lifelong impacts. Ensuring that students understand the seriousness of such comments is crucial to maintaining a safe and secure learning environment for everyone.

We all have a role to play in keeping our schools safe places for learning and growth. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with local law enforcement and all school districts in Montgomery County, remains steadfast in its commitment to swiftly addressing any threats and ensuring the safety of our schools.
