Giant Roaming Gnomes to take over City Place this Fall
North Houston’s City Place is getting a major dose of whimsy this September as Roaming Gnomes, a large-scale public art installation, arrives through the business and leisure destination’s ongoing partnership with acclaimed Texas-based art advisory firm Weingarten Art Group.
Created by internationally acclaimed, Sydney-based design studio Amigo & Amigo, Roaming Gnomes will be on view September 26 through Sunday, November 8, at 1250 Lake Plaza Drive. The free exhibition will be open daily from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
The immersive exhibition features eight giant, brilliantly illuminated gnomes dispersed throughout the community’s mixed-use urban core. Each larger-than-life character has its own name, distinct personality, expressive pose and fashion-forward attire, transforming City Place into an open-air gallery and discovery experience for visitors of all ages.
Rather than experiencing the artwork from a single vantage point, guests become part of the adventure, exploring plazas, pathways and green spaces as each colorful character reveals itself along the journey. By day, the oversized sculptures create playful moments of surprise. After sunset, they transform into glowing landmarks that reshape the landscape with vibrant light, creating an entirely different experience.
The installation has delighted audiences at premier public art festivals, including the Napa Lighted Art Festival in California and the World of Winter Festival in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where its imaginative scale, interactive nature and highly shareable moments made it a favorite among families, art lovers and photographers. Reflecting Amigo & Amigo’s philosophy that public art should inspire participation rather than passive observation, Roaming Gnomes transforms everyday public spaces into places of curiosity, connection and joy.
Led by Simone Chua, Amigo & Amigo specializes in permanent and temporary interactive artworks that blend art, technology, light and play. The award-winning studio has completed hundreds of installations and exhibitions in more than 50 festivals worldwide, creating immersive experiences that encourage exploration while fostering meaningful connections between people and place.

The curated series has introduced local and visiting audiences to artists from around the world while transforming the district into a destination for immersive cultural experiences that are free and accessible to the community.
