IRONMAN Texas postponed due to Harris County COVID-19 Threat Level
IRONMAN shared the following event status update for its events across the state of Texas today, including a postponement of IRONMAN Texas.
IRONMAN Officials have been working diligently with local authorities, agencies, and other key stakeholders to create events that meet local community objectives and are within the expectations set by public health entities. The IRONMAN Safe Return to Racing guidelines will be updated as policies are refined and can be viewed here.
Based on information provided by Harris County and Harris County Toll Road Authority that the Harris County COVID-19 Threat Level System is currently at Level 1: Stay Home, and the resulting impact this has on the bike course, the IRONMAN Texas triathlon unfortunately cannot take place on April 24, 2021. All potential options are being reviewed and it is our hope to confirm a new October 2021 event date in The Woodlands by early April. Athletes that are registered for the 2021 IRONMAN Texas triathlon will be receiving an email with additional information.
The IRONMAN Texas Facebook page also made the following update today in a post:
After a challenging 2020 which saw numerous sporting events cancelled around the world, our teams have been hard at work to prepare safe and enjoyable in-person events for our athletes in 2021, including the IRONMAN Texas triathlon.
We have learned from both Harris County and Harris County Toll Road Authority that due to the Harris County COVID-19 Threat Level System currently at Level 1: Stay Home (https://www.readyharris.org/Stay-Safe), and the resulting impact this has on the bike course, we regret to inform you that the IRONMAN Texas triathlon cannot take place on April 24, 2021.
This is not the news any of us wanted to receive especially after the challenges faced over the past year, and we are working diligently with the local authorities and key stakeholders on all potential options. We know how anxious our athletes are to be able to return to racing and we hope to have further event updates for you in early April.
With the support of our host communities, it remains our top priority to deliver the excellent and safe race experiences our athletes deserve. Our teams are continuing their hard work with local authorities and agencies and are hopeful to have a good solution in place for IRONMAN Texas to take place in The Woodlands during October 2021 that meets local community objectives.
All registered athletes will be receiving an email with more information. If you are registered for the 2021 IRONMAN Texas triathlon and have not received this e-mail or have additional questions, please contact texas@ironman.com.
We thank our athletes for their ongoing patience and support and look forward to The Woodlands with a great event in the future.
IRONMAN Texas
Despite the change for IRONMAN Texas, as of today, the IRONMAN 70.3 Texas triathlon taking place in Galveston on April 11 and the IRONMAN 70.3 Lubbock taking place on June 27, remain as scheduled and preparations are ongoing.
Additionally, IRONMAN officials are working on an additional race location in Texas to host a full-distance IRONMAN event in 2021. More information on this is expected to be finalized and shared in the near future.
