Prior to the start of the 2018 Memorial Hermann IRONMAN North American Championship Texas triathlon, IRONMAN made the decision to cut a portion of the bike course reducing the distance from the standard 112 miles to approximately 110 miles. This decision was made in the interest of athlete safety. Because of the shortened distance, no time records will be recognized. The event saw more than 2,500 athletes representing 50 states and 53 countries start the race. Competitors ranged in age from 18–78 years old. One of more than 40 events in the global IRONMAN Series, the Memorial Hermann IRONMAN North American Championship Texas triathlon led athletes along a 2.4-mile swim, 110-mile bike and 26.2-mile run throughout The Woodlands and its surrounding areas. The swim took place in Lake Woodlands, while the one-loop bike course took participants through Montgomery and Harris Counties. Greeted by the supporting crowd, athletes then undertook the triple-loop run entirely within The Woodlands that concluded with a finish on Waterway Ave. The event offered a total professional prize purse of $150,000 and 80 coveted age group qualifying slots to the 2018 IRONMAN World Championship, taking place on October 18 in Kailua Kona, Hawai`i.
