Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office affirms Commitment to Transparency in Criminal Case Reporting

By  |

In response to the questions received by our office about certain reporting requirements made by the Attorney General’s Office, the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office reaffirms its commitment to transparency and accountability in the criminal justice system by fully complying with the new quarterly and annual case reporting requirements established by the Attorney General’s Office in March of this year.

Montgomery County was the first District Attorney’s Office in Texas to successfully meet the initial, the quarterly, and the annual reporting standards in full.

District Attorney Brett Ligon stated: “Our office strongly believes that transparency is essential to maintaining public trust in the justice system. While some offices across the state have expressed concerns about these reporting requirements, in our county, we have found a way that is not unreasonably burdensome or unnecessarily costly, to comply with Attorney General Paxton’s request. By doing so, we are ensuring accountability while continuing to fulfill our primary duty of seeking justice.”

The new reporting rules require district and county attorneys in larger counties to submit regular reports detailing charging decisions, case outcomes, and related information.

“Our office will continue to follow the law and do so transparently,” Ligon added. “We recognize that prosecutorial discretion is a vital responsibility, and with that responsibility comes the obligation to be open with the citizens we serve.”

The Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office remains committed to ensuring that its processes and decisions remain transparent and will continue to work towards strengthening trust between prosecutors and the communities they serve.
