The Woodlands Symphony To Present “HomeGrown,” A Celebration of Arts and Artists

By  |

The Woodlands Symphony Orchestra will present a multimedia experience with HomeGrown: A celebration concert honoring the musicians, composers and artists in The Woodlands, the symphony’s final concert in its Cantus Firmus (Fixed Song) season. The concert will take place on Sunday, April 30 at 7:00 p.m. at The Woodlands United Methodist Church, located at 2200 Lake Woodlands Drive in The Woodlands. Tickets are available at www.woodlandssymphony.org.

Under the artistic direction of Darryl Bayer, the evening will be orchestrated with a variety of segments that include original compositions, classical favorites, soloists, live performance arts, video/media enhancement and two multi-generational-diverse symphonies on stage at the same time.

The full 55-piece Woodlands Symphony Orchestra will perform native-born composer’s Colin Larson’s Symphony No. 2 in C# Minor. Larsen was born in The Woodlands, attended CISD schools, and now teaches orchestra at McCullough Jr. High. Cello soloist and winner of the Young Texas Artist Competition Katherine Audas will also perform Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme. Audas is a graduate student at Rice University and already a most sought-after soloist around the country.

As part of the multimedia experience, local artists from The Woodlands Arts Council will flank the stage and paint their impressions of the music onto canvas. These unique “performance artworks” will be silent-auctioned at intermission to benefit area nonprofit organizations. Highlights from the Inspire Film Festival will be displayed on the widescreen projectors, including the performance of the Landfill Harmonic Orchestra.

For the second half of the concert, the baton will be passed to Darryl Bayer and The Woodlands’ very own W.A.Y.S., the Woodlands Area Youth Symphony, celebrating the completion of its first full season, as 18 area junior high, high school, and Lone Stat College students sit side-by-side with the adults of the WSO to perform Dvorak’s New World Symphony and Hoedown from Rodeo by Aaron Copeland, as video plays images of famous artwork in and around The Woodlands along with a historic look at the past three “comeback” seasons of The Woodlands Symphony and new youth orchestra.

Comprised of area musicians, The Woodlands Symphony is designed to be an orchestra that encapsulates the beauty of The Woodlands with an emphasis on unique and diverse programming. The WSO embraces all with unity through the arts.

“I am so happy for the success of the WSO over the past three seasons but especially for the formation of the new youth symphony. The children and families of The Woodlands no longer have to drive into Houston for a quality youth orchestra experience,” said Darryl Bayer, founding director of The Woodlands Area Youth Symphony. “Playing with the Landfill Harmonic at Inspire Film Festival gave the children a boost to their orchestral confidence and an appreciation for what we have right here in our hometown.”

Discount advance tickets can be bought online for $20 adult seating, $10 for students and seniors. Corporate sponsors for the April 30 concert include Lone Star College, The John Cooper School, Texas Brass Ensemble and c3 – Creative Content Creations.
