3 Valentine Safety Reminders for Parents

By  |

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner! In preparing for a romantic evening out or a fun family activity, please plan ahead and take preventative steps to ensure you and your family are safe this holiday.

Hello Woodlands talked with Meshonda Womble, Director of Nannies of The Woodlands, who shared three great reminders for any parent on Valentine’s Day this year.

  1. Kids’ School Parties

With school Valentine parties around the corner, consider reminding your child’s teacher of his or her allergies. The teacher can then inform other parents of items they should avoid buying for the class party. This quick reminder to the school can help ensure a safe celebration for all. It is also helpful to have a written plan with the school on how to best manage your child’s allergies and a possible allergic reaction. Kidshealth.org recommends talking with your child about foods he or she cannot eat and taking more responsibility for their safety. It may just be safer for your little one to bring all goodies home and allow you to inspect them first.

  1. Date Nights and Getaways

When planning a Valentine date night out with your significant other be sure to keep your plans private; at least for a little while. In a recent article, Jess Bolluyt suggests that you should never announce your plans on social media. Posting pics or sharing your location online can serve as an invitation to unwelcome guests. It is recommended to share the fun details later! Waiting to post, tag or like will help make you and your home less of an easy target for thieves.

  1. Pets

Don’t forget to keep a watchful eye out for your pets. It is reported that each year there are numbers of potentially fatal cases, where pets come into contact with chocolate, candlelight, cocktails or flowers. Pet parents should keep these pet harmful items out of the reach of their fur babies. If you suspect your pet has ingested a potentially poisonous substance, you can reach the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center 24 hours a day, 365 days a year at (888) 426-4435.

Also, remember February is American Heart Month! For Valentine’s Day it is a great time to start a heart-healthy life style. The American Heart Association suggest we all maintain a healthy weight, be more active and eat healthy. For more information, visit heart.org.

Nannies of The Woodlands finds that an ounce of precaution can go a long way. We hope these quick reminders help ensure a Happy Valentine’s Day for you and your loved ones.
