Community Unites to Help Montgomery County Food Bank Prepare for Hurricane Season
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TX – Montgomery County Food Bank (MCFB) is committed to addressing food insecurity in Montgomery County by uniting the community to fight hunger. Amid the current economic conditions, MCFB has seen a sharp 45% increase in the number of people served in one month: from 55,000 to 79,000. When a hurricane or other disaster strikes, the need for emergency food and water assistance will quickly increase – making disaster preparedness a vital component of the Food Bank’s operations. This year, forecasters predict a 65% chance of an above average hurricane season according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Climate Prediction Center’s 2022 Atlantic Hurricane Season forecast. With the ongoing effects of COVID-19 and skyrocketing inflation, there is a potential for an exponential surge in the community’s need for food assistance should a hurricane or any other disaster hit Montgomery County.
To prepare, Montgomery County Food Bank works closely with its community partners. Local grocery retailers H-E-B, Kroger, and Walmart have united to help the Food Bank in its disaster preparedness efforts by donating truckloads of water bottles. Through a close relationship between MCFB and Montgomery County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (MCOHSEM), the donated emergency water is being stored at the MCOHSEM facility, allowing the Food Bank more storage space in its warehouse. In the event of a disaster requiring immediate food and water relief, MCFB will work closely with MCOHSEM and provide assistance throughout Montgomery County.

Through partnerships with county officials, retail partners, donors and an extensive network of partner agencies, Montgomery County Food Bank will be able to assist in meeting the need before and after a disaster occurs. The Food Bank recommends residents prepare for the hurricane season with a kit of non-perishable food, water and other basic supplies.
