Archeology Day at the Genealogy Room at the Conroe Central Library

By  |

The Genealogy Room at the Conroe Central Library will be celebrating Archeology Day 2024 on Saturday, October 19th from 11am-3pm with displays of artifacts and family friendly activities.

This free event is open to the public and will take place inside the Conroe Central Library, upstairs, and in the Genealogy Room. Pinch Pot Kits will be on a first-come-first-served basis for attendees only.

The Texas Historical Commission (THC) celebrates Archaeology Month in October, “a celebration of history and heritage through the lens of archeology.” International Archaeology Day is celebrated on the third Saturday of October each year. The National Park Service is a collaborating partner with the Archaeological Institute of America.

Patrons will be able to talk to archeologists on a variety of subjects, such as Incan and Mayan research, Native American artifacts, and the use of Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) for finding possible site targets from the air. The Conroe Heritage Museum will also have their “Native American Trunk” display. There will also be family-friendly hands-on activities in the Genealogy Room, such as a petroglyph craft, and a simulated “dig” for finding trinkets. To cap it off, there will be take-home crafts, and free publicity materials from the THC. The Texas Historical Commission has donated 100 “Pinch Pot Activity Kits” that come with clay, tools for decorating, and a handout with links to online resources. Celebrating Archeology Day & Month is a way for the Genealogy Room to share our love for history, investigation, and discovering treasure. Whether it’s digging for artifacts or researching our ancestors, genealogists and historians love uncovering and solving mysteries, just like archeologists. And it’s a way to get youth interested in history, and the lives of their ancestors. I like to say that genealogy is the most “family-friendly” activity there is,” says Laura Politte the Genealogy Librarian for the MCMLS Library System.
