Ardest Gallery to Celebrate Black History Month Through Art Events
THE WOODLANDS, TX – Ardest Gallery, a local fine arts gallery, has announced a slate of events in February celebrating Black History Month. Black History Month was created to pay tribute to generations of African Americans and their contributions to the United States. Ardest Gallery strives to honor Black people through the presentation of art throughout the month of February, featuring talented local artists.
First, Houston artist Lauren Luna will present her solo show entitled, “Little Black Girl Joy” during an opening reception to be held on February 10th from 4-8 p.m. at Ardest Gallery in The Woodlands. Luna’s show will remain open through March 2nd and works will also be shown in an online gallery.
“As an artist, I believe that representation matters. It is important for individuals to see themselves reflected in the world around them, including art. That is why I am passionate about painting little black girls. Through my work, I aim to celebrate the beauty and joy that these young girls embody,” shared Luna in her artist statement.
“Ardest Gallery is proud to contribute to the important conversation surrounding inclusion,” said Julie Verville, Gallery Director and Owner. “Luna’s work captures the essence of the young girls she chose to depict, conveying deep emotions that these young girls are experiencing.”
“By painting little black girls, I hope to inspire others to see the beauty and value in all individuals, regardless of race or ethnicity. Through my work, I want to encourage young black girls to see themselves as beautiful and worthy, and to embrace their unique identities,” shared Luna.
In addition to the oil paintings highlighted in “Little Black Girl Joy,” the gallery also carries signed copies of Luna’s new children’s book entitled, Maya’s Masterpiece. This book is an enchanting story encouraging all children to embrace their own creativity.
Ardest Gallery is set to host a second art event celebrating Black History Month on Saturday, February 24th, showcasing works and designs by local photographer and fashion brand owner Jamar Carrington.
“Jamar strives to create a narrative about what he’s captured, turning something simple into something beautiful,” said Verville.
Throughout the day on Saturday, February 24th, Carrington’s available works will be on display in this pop-up style event. The artist will be available for Q&A.
