THE WOODLANDS, TX – Have you ever stepped into an art museum and wished you could jump right into the painting? This summer at The Woodlands Children’s Museum, you can do just that! Children can explore five well-known works of art and “step into” interactive settings, gaining an appreciation for the world of art. The Framed: Step into Art temporary exhibit emphasizes that children are never too young to experience the beauty of art.

“At most art museums, visitors often see signs that say ‘please do not touch.’ But not at The Woodlands Children’s Museum. We invite our young guests to interact and play with each exhibit so that they can discover more about their world,” stated Angela Colton, the museum’s Executive Director. “The Framed exhibit offers a terrific opportunity to connect and enjoy art in these life-size reproductions.”

In Camp at Lake O’Hara by John Singer Sargent, children can climb inside a tent, cook a meal over a campfire, and compare the shadows of tree branches. In Corn Festival by Diego Rivera, children can add flowers and ribbons to the corn husks. In Dinner for Threshers by Grant Wood, families can learn about rural life and enjoy dramatic play in the dining room, kitchen, and front porch. Big Chicken by Clementine Hunter lets children climb onto a giant rooster and create imaginary animals. The Many Monas exhibit celebrates the original Mona Lisa painting by Leonardo da Vinci and features a collection of parodies and an opportunity to see yourself in a Mona Lisa cutout and mirror. An Art Hunt scavenger hunt also encourages children to look through each exhibit for shapes and images.

During the month of July, guests can also create mini masterpieces at our art bar, The Muse, as well-known artists’ birthdays are celebrated. Projects inspired by Frida Kahlo, Gustav Klimt, Rembrandt, Alexander Calder, and Jean Dubuffet will be offered. The specially-curated projects allow children to practice fine motor skills as they paint, glue, sort and embrace tactile experiences and create their very own one-of-a-kind artwork.

“We are delighted to see the smile on children’s faces when they engage in art by creating their own pieces with the help of a parent or one of our amazing staff members,” stated Colton. “While children enjoy painting and gluing, we strive to educate them on color balance, spatial properties and the use of different materials and processes to create unique outcomes.”
