“The Artistic Legacy of Michael Frary: A Texas Modernist” Show on display in The Woodlands

By  |

On the evening of Thursday, November 16, 2023, The Woodlands Art Gallery & Studios hosted the opening reception for “The Artistic Legacy of Michael Frary: A Texas Modernist” Art Show featuring artwork by Michael Frary and members of The Woodlands Art League.

The Woodlands Art Gallery & Studios is located at 208 Nursery Rd. The Woodlands, TX 77380. Opening reception attendees had the opportunity to see the beautiful art collection – the first time Michael Frary’s art has been on display for the public in 18 years – and meet special guest Mark Frary, son of the late artist Michael Frary (1918-2005).

Mark Frary shared that his father, Michael Frary, was considered a mid-century modernist and trained originally as an architect. The collection on display includes some of the first watercolors his father ever created and he would use different techniques, using various materials such as oil paints and acrylic, sometimes on the same pieces of artwork over the years.

The Michael Frary art collection will be on display until January 12, 2024.

The Woodlands Art Gallery & Studios offers original fine art from regional artists and guests share it is more “like a home in the woods rather than a cavernous art gallery” – in fact most of the furniture is from the gallery owner’s previous home.  Artist and Owner Emily Chiles Startz moved to the “Best Town to Live In,” The Woodlands, Texas, and opened The Woodlands Art Gallery & Studios in December 2021. Emily also has her art studio in the gallery where she creates abstracts, landscapes, and portraits. The gallery sells art from featured artists, displays art on a consignment basis from local artists and works of art from their art-loving neighbors, and sell used books in their Reading Room.

The Woodlands Art Gallery & Studios is open Tuesday – Friday 10 a.m.– 6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.– 2 p.m., and is closed Sunday and Monday.
