The Woodlands 50th Anniversary Kickoff and Time Capsule Ceremony held in Hughes Landing
This morning kicked off a week of celebration and the first of many events held today, Monday, October 14, through Saturday, October 19 – the date of the grand celebration – to honor The Woodlands 50th Anniversary.
Today The Woodlands Township, Howard Hughes, elected officials, community leaders, anniversary partners, and people of The Woodlands came together for a ceremony at the Hughes Landing Band Shell. After the week of celebration, The Woodlands 50th time capsule will be placed at Town Green Park, with hopes of being opened in the future after 50 years.
During the ceremony, featured speakers included Jim Carman, President of the Houston Region – Howard Hughes, and Dr. Ann Snyder, Chairman of The Woodlands Township Board of Directors, Grant Irons, son of the late Gerald Irons and Myrna Irons and on behalf of the Irons family, and Bruce Tough, community leader and founder of Tough Law Firm, PLLC.
Representatives and Community partners then took turns placing special items and mementos in the time capsule to honor The Woodlands 50th Anniversary. In time capsule will hold:
- Proclamation Harris County Precinct 3 Commissioner Ramsey
- Proclamation from Rep. Steve Roth
- Senate proclamation from State Senator Brandon Creighton
- Proclamation from Senator Ted Cruz
- Proclamation and D-Day Normandy Landings 80th Anniversary Commemorative Coin from Congressman Dan Crenshaw
- Documentary of The Woodlands and honoring George Mitchell produced by George’s Coffee Club
- One of the last printed Interfaith Directories and 50th anniversary T-shirt from Interfaith of The Woodlands
- Patch and Challenge Coin commentating The Woodlands Fire Department’s 50th Anniversary from The Woodlands Fire Department
- Scrapbook with room key and name badge from The Woodlands Resort
- 50th Year Celebration Book and Rotary flag from Rotary Club of The Woodlands
- Special Commissioned Poster with performers and impact report from The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion
- Pickleball, mini Woodlands Trolley, and copy of The Woodlands magazine from The Woodlands Township
- The Woodlands Photo Book (available for purchase in November 2024 and holiday season) from The Woodlands Township / Visit The Woodlands
- A masterplan drawing of Town Center, made in 1977 by Frank Gary, a brick taken from Grogan’s Mill Village Center from the former Randall’s, iPad with video of Jim Carman and video clips from the 50th Anniversary events and solar charger from Howard Hughes

The Woodlands 50th Anniversary’s fun-filled week of festivities kicked off today Monday, October 14 and will culminate on the actual anniversary date of October 19. The weeklong celebration will showcase The Woodlands’ dedication to its heritage, future, philanthropy, sustainability, environment, and public art.
