The Woodlands Bar Association Offering Scholarships to Local High School Students

THE WOODLANDS, TX – This marks the eighth year for The Woodlands Bar Association (WBA) to award scholarships to outstanding local high school students. We are pleased to offer three (3) Future Lawyer Scholarships for 2021: one (1) Future Lawyer Scholarship in Memoriam of Kevin T. Shea and one (1) Future Lawyer Scholarship in Memoriam of Ida G. Stewart and one (1) Future Lawyer Scholarship in Honor of Patricia Chapman. Applicants must have an interest in attending law school upon completion of an undergraduate program and have aspirations of becoming an attorney.

These scholarships are open to all high school students who are residents of The Woodlands and/or Montgomery County at the time of application, regardless of the high school attended (public, private, home school, etc.). Applicants must be graduating seniors in good standing at their school at the time of application and must be attending a four (4) year university in the fall of 2021 or, in the alternative, must be attending a community college with the intention to matriculate to a four (4) year university at the completion of their course of study at the community college.

SELECTION CRITERIA: The scholarships will be awarded based upon your application with emphasis on the following criteria for the Shea and Stewart Scholarships:

  • Financial need
  • Academic Performance
  • Extracurricular activities & community involvement
  • Demonstration of a strong interest to pursue a legal career
  • Recommendations

  • Extracurricular activities
  • Good citizenship
  • Community involvement
  • Demonstration of a strong interest to pursue a legal career

Please note that for all of the above scholarships the personal statement will be given greater consideration than the recommendations.

One (1) recipient will be awarded $2,500 Future Lawyer Scholarships in Memoriam of Kevin T. Shea; one (1) recipient will be awarded a $2,500.00 Future Lawyer Scholarship in Memoriam of Ida G. Stewart; one (1) recipient will be awarded $2,500 Future Lawyer Scholarship in Honor of Patricia Chapman for a total of three (3) WBA Future Lawyer Scholarship recipients in 2021. The WBA Scholarship Committee, consisting of at least one (1) WBA Board member, will review applications. A personal interview of the applicants may also be requested at ten sole discretion of the Committee.

Only complete application packets will be considered by the WBA. Completed applications must be received by the WBA no later than 11:00pm on April 9, 2021.

The recipients of the scholarships will be notified of the award by April 30, 2021. The recipients will be presented with an award plaque at the WBA Annual Meeting that will be held in May and the meeting will most likely be online this year. The recipients’ virtual attendance at the award ceremony is expected. The actual scholarship award amount will be credited directly to each student’s account at his or her University once accepted and enrolled.
