Walmart announces New Workforce Investment in Houston to Help Connect Workers to Higher-Quality Careers
Walmart for Good announced a multi-year workforce development investment in Houston as part of a broader effort to help workers build skills, connect to quality jobs and advance their careers in a labor market being reshaped by artificial intelligence and other technological change.
Over the next five years, Walmart for Good aims to help up to 20,000 workers across participating communities move into higher-quality careers. In Houston, the initial investment of $250,000 was presented to:
- Greater Houston Partnership (GHP) to help expand their Upskill Houston initiative in collaboration with United Way of Greater Houston (UWGH)
- Gulf Coast Workforce Board (GCWB)
- Good Reason Houston (GRH)
- The Kinder Institute of Urban Research of Rice University (KIUR)
- Greater Houston Community Foundation (GHCF)
- Houston City College (HCC) and San Jacinto College
The grant is part of a celebration marking the 10th anniversary of Walmart Academy, the largest private training program in the country focused on career development and advancement opportunities for Walmart associates.

That’s why we’re proud to support local efforts in Houston that can help connect people to better jobs and long-term advancement.”
The investment strategy is based on a simple idea: the building blocks for economic mobility already exist but are often fragmented. By strengthening local workforce systems, Walmart for Good aims to help workers advance and employers find and retain talent.
Since 2015, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation have invested more than $300 million in workforce development efforts. This new investment in Houstoncontinues that commitment, supporting local solutions as the future of work evolves.
