WBA Scholarship Recipients Committed to Community

THE WOODLANDS, TX – The Woodlands Bar Association (WBA) proudly announces four 2020 scholarship recipients. While the Bar has traditionally only offered three scholarships to Montgomery County graduating seniors, the WBA is excited to announce the addition of a fourth scholarship geared towards graduating seniors who are dedicated to community services.

Four local high school seniors recently received WBA Future Lawyers Scholarships, named after former WBA board Members, Ida G. Stewart, Kevin T. Shea, and Patricia G. Chapman.

Ida G. Stewart Memorial Scholarship

Ida G. Stewart was a three-time graduate of the University of Texas and she practiced law for more than 20 years in The Woodlands area. Stewart was dedicated to education and ensuring that young people realize their dreams.

Jose A. Solis, Jr.

The Ida G. Stewart Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $3,000 was awarded to Jose A. Solis, Jr. Solis is an alumnus of Caney Creek High School and will be attending Texas A&M University. In addition to graduating third in his class, Solis served as the President of the NCHS Speech and Debate Team, served on Student Council, and was on the Student World Affairs Council. Solis was named a 2020 Academic All American by the National Speech and Debate Association, served as a Youth Director for the Alliance of New Americans, and was a leader in the Next Generation Leadership Program. Solis also founded Jolt, a 501(c)(3), which promotes political and cultural awareness in the Latino community.

Kevin T. Shea Memorial Scholarship

Kevin T. Shea was an alumnus of the University of Texas and obtained his J.D. from St. Mary’s University School of Law. Shea was dedicated to helping his community, including having served on the WBA Board and volunteering hundreds of pro-bono hours for legal work for veterans. This year the WBA is proud to award two scholarships in the amount of $2,250 in memory of Kevin T. Shea.

The first recipient of the Kevin T. Shea Memorial Scholarship is Jocelyn Aguilar. Aguilar is an alumnus of Porter High School and will be attending the University of Texas, Austin. She held numerous leadership positions in Skills USA, DECA, Future Business Leaders of America, National Technical Honor Society, and was also a member of the YMCA Mock Trial Witness and Advocates Team.

The second recipient of the Kevin T. Shea Memorial Scholarship is Andres Velasquez. Velasquez is an alumnus of Caney Creek High School and will be attending Texas State University. In high school, he was a member of the National Honor Society, National English Honor Society, Student World Affairs Council, Student Council, and a distinguished and long term band member. In addition to high academic achievements and extracurricular involvement, Velasquez also worked 30 hours per week throughout high school.

Patricia G. Chapman Scholarship

Patricia G. Chapman is practicing attorney in The Woodlands, Texas. Chapman has been a driving force in ensuring access to justice for all Texas, including helping to establish pro bono projects in Montgomery County, including the monthly Law Line and Montgomery County Legal Aid Coalition Clinic. She is consistently one of Lone Star Legal Aid’s outstanding pro-bono volunteers and recently served as the Montgomery County Bar Association President. Chapman believes that service to others must be a large part of life, as is evidenced by her ongoing dedication to legal services. The Patricia G. Chapman Scholarship in the amount of $3,000 was awarded to Pablo Flower.

Flower is an alumnus of The John Cooper School and will be attending George Washington University. Flower is committed to community involvement and service, having served as the Student Director of Youth for Human Rights USA, Inc., in addition to interning at the Dispute Resolution Center of Montgomery County, Inc. Flower also volunteered at Interfaith of The Woodlands, among other nonprofits, and had the opportunity to attend various leadership programs, including Duke TIP Human Rights Advocacy, Georgetown University Foreign Policy Program, Yale University Foreign Policy Program, and the National Student Leadership Conference Leadership Program at Georgetown University. Flower is also a four time recipient of the Gold President’s Volunteer Service award.
