“Echoes of our Heritage: Native American Portraits of the 1800s” is a collection of portraits inspired by Brett G. Hall’s experience working with indigenous peoples, where he developed a deep appreciation for their culture. Through his portraiture, Hall amplifies the echoes of their voices across time, leaving a lasting impression on history.

Hall started his career in advertising and marketing, developing strategies for corporate companies across the West. In his spare time, he began painting and showcasing his work at outdoor festivals, galleries, and art competitions nationwide, which sparked his passion for creating art. Using traditional acrylics, Hall brings to life lost or overlooked stories from history.

Why does Hall paint? “To give a voice to those who have been silenced. To give eyes to those who do not see. To give a heart to those who do not want to care,” Hall shared. “Art should disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed. Perhaps, in some small way, my work can comfort those who remember and disturb those who would like to forget.”

Hall started painting the portraits about 15 years ago and then traveled with his wife, displaying the growing collection at art festivals and galleries across the county. Hall is inspired by real people, finding inspiration from photos and stories documented in the Library of Congress. Each piece comes alive on canvas with his trademark orange, yellow, and brown colors, and is now playing with backsplashes of blue and even a pop art look in his newest pieces.

“Echoes of our Heritage: Native American Portraits of the 1800s” will remain on display until May 9, 2025 and the artwork is currently for sale at The Woodlands Art Gallery & Studios located at 208 Nursery Rd. The Woodlands, TX 77380.

The Woodlands Art Gallery & Studios offers original fine art from regional artists and guests share it is more “like a home in the woods rather than a cavernous art gallery” – in fact most of the furniture is from the gallery owner’s previous home.  Artist and Owner Emily Chiles Startz moved to the “Best Town to Live In,” The Woodlands, Texas, and opened The Woodlands Art Gallery & Studios in December 2021. Emily also has her art studio in the gallery where she creates abstracts, landscapes, and portraits.

The gallery sells art from featured artists, displays art on a consignment basis from local artists and works of art from their art-loving neighbors, sells used books in their Reading Room, and now features a Gift Shop. The Woodlands Art Gallery & Studios is open Tuesday – Friday 10 a.m.– 6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.– 2 p.m., and is closed Sunday and Monday.
