The Nonprofit of the Month is The Harmonie Grace Foundation, a nonprofit organization with a mission is to provide funding for and raise awareness in support of services that provide financial and educational support, emotional comfort including after-life care for families who have endured the loss of premature infants, and empowering activities to Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) families. Read our interview below with The Harmonie Grace Foundation’s Founder and Executive Director, Adriauna Davis.
The Interview
What is the organization’s story?
Adriauna and Shahid’s routine prenatal care visits were progressing very well until Adriauna’s obstetrician discovered that Adriauna’s cervix had shortened. Adriauna was placed on bed rest after having a surgical procedure done to reduce early labor. Adriauna did everything she could until she went to the doctor’s office and while there, her water broke at 22 weeks and 4 days. She remained in the hospital until it was time to deliver. The neonatologist and obstetrician suggested that Adriauna deliver soon because baby’s heart kept declining. Born at 23 weeks and 1 day, Adriauna and Shahid welcomed their first baby girl, Harmonie Grace, on June 23, 2018. Weighing 15 ounces at birth, the medical team didn’t expect Harmonie Grace to survive. Harmonie was the smallest micro preemie in the Women and Children’s Hospital prior to being transferred to a higher level of care. Harmonie Grace fought as long as she could before she succumbed to her illness on January 30, 2019. Every day was different for Harmonie, whether good or bad, however, Adriauna and Shahid were grateful for every moment. The journey wasn’t easy! It took a lot of prayer to get through the NICU. Harmonie may not be with us today but she is surely with us in spirit.
How did the organization start?
The organization started after my daughter loss her battle to being a micro preemie, pulmonary hypertension and preexisting conditions. After witnessing other families experiencing the same traumatic experience, I felt compelled to advocate for families and support families who are unable to support themselves.
What is your mission and why?
The Harmonie Grace Foundation provides funding for and raise awareness in support of services that provide financial and educational support, emotional comfort including after-life care for families who have endured the loss of premature infants, and empowering activities to Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) families.
Who and where do you serve?
States of Alabama, Tennessee, and Texas (Montgomery County and Harris County).
What programs and services do you offer?
NICUMOMSCONNECT Series Platform, Parent to Parent Workshops, Educational Awareness, Emotional Comfort, After life care / assist with financial burdens / burial cost.
What makes this organization unique?
As a former NICU mom, I have first hand experience about what families endures. I did not start this organization knowing bits and pieces about Neonatal Intensive Care Unit families needs and the day to day things they go through but knowing exactly what it takes to survive the NICU no matter the end of their journey. I am able to be an advocate for NICU families who cannot advocate for themselves.
How can the community get involved, volunteer, and support this organization?
The community can volunteer at our fundraising events on June 25: our 3rd Annual 5K Walk/Run at Town Green Park and our Inaugural Black Tie Gala at The Woodlands Resort.
We are also seeking sponsorships to fulfill the mission of this organization to support NICU families.
