Help Build the Walls of a Home at Market Street with Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County

By  |

THE WOODLANDS, TX – The community is invited to contribute to the success of affordable and safe housing by participating in a Wall Building event at Market Street in The Woodlands beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 5 with Habitat for Humanity Montgomery County (Habitat MCTX). The organization is hosting this event in honor of World Habitat Day, a day that the United Nations General Assembly took an important step in promoting the idea that everyone deserves a decent place to live.

Habitat MCTX has been given the unique opportunity to construct the framework for a new home at Market Street underwritten by Entergy. After the walls have been built, they will be moved to Habitat MCTX’s Cedar Creek subdivision in Conroe. There the walls will become the frame for a new home for a qualified family.

No construction skills are necessary, and everyone is welcome! Habitat MCTX’s skilled construction volunteers will be on site to assist with hammering nails and to provide guidance throughout the event. Volunteers will be required to sign up beforehand and space is limited. Families can sign the walls that will be used to construct a home for a new homeowner, buy a stud to go into a Habitat MCTX home, and there will be activities for kids as well! Be a part of making a family’s dream of home ownership true! The event will end at 6:00 p.m. with a blessing for the home.

“Habitat is pleased to bring this event to The Woodlands community,” stated Vicki Johnson, Executive Director for Habitat MCTX. “Market Street is partnering with us to bring awareness of our mission and the ability of all of us to help our neighbors achieve affordable home ownership. Nothing is like the sound of volunteers building walls and the sounds of hammers reverberating throughout the square. We hope everyone will come out and experience this unique opportunity.”

Habitat MCTX has a mission to build safe, decent, affordable homes for families in our community. After working all day, going to school, or doing what we enjoy, it is nice to have a safe place to come home to. Not everyone has that benefit and as a community we are learning more and more about the importance of home. Participation in this event will contribute to making the dream of homeownership a reality for a family in need.

Habitat MCTX homes cost approximately $60,000 to sponsor. That includes $10,000 for a foundation, doorknobs throughout the house cost $50, and every donation makes a difference to reach the goal of completion. Volunteers can sign up to work alongside professional contractors to build the home with step-by-step supervision as a group with coworkers or part of an organization, or alternatively on your own as an individual. Construction volunteers work alongside the family that will soon call the house “home.” Learn more about volunteering at www.habitatmctx.org/get-involved/volunteer-as-a-group.
