Montgomery County Food Bank Seeks Donations for its Holiday Food Drive Through Dec. 7

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TX – The next time you’re in the grocery store or organizing your pantry, be sure to set aside a few items to support the Montgomery County Food Bank’s Holiday Food Drive.

According to Allison Hulett, Montgomery County Food Bank President and CEO, over 76,000 individuals in Montgomery County are food insecure, including 29,000 children. “Hunger hides, it is all around us. The food insecure are classmates, church members, neighbors, work colleagues – people we see every day,” she explained. “The holidays can make food insecurity even more of a struggle.”

In an effort to help those in need, neighborhoods, businesses, families and civic organizations are encouraged to collect nutritious, non-perishable items over the next several weeks for the Holiday Food Drive. On Friday, Dec. 7, all collections will be dropped off at The Woodlands United Methodist Church at 2200 Lake Woodlands Dr. in The Woodlands from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The day will be filled with music, performances by area students, Starbuck’s hot chocolate, as well as a visit from Santa.

Donation items needed include:

• Canned meat (tuna, chicken, spam, even pouches, etc.)
• Canned pasta (ravioli, spaghettios, etc.)
• 100% fruit juices
• Tomato and pasta sauces
• Canned soups, stews, and chilis
• Peanut butter
• Jelly and jams
• Pasta
• Cereals
• Baby food (with long expiration dates)
• Toiletries
• Monetary donations ($1 provides five meals)

“With the hustle and bustle of the holidays, it’s easy for us to take for granted that we are blessed access to plenty of nutritious food,” said Dr. Ann Snyder, who serves as a board member for the food bank and is the Executive Director of Generosity for The Woodlands United Methodist Church. “The holidays are a perfect time to think of our fellow neighbors who are not as fortunate. We encourage the entire county to join our efforts to support families, seniors, and children who struggle with hunger and help make their holiday season full of delicious joy.”

Quality Home Products is the presenting sponsor of this year’s Holiday Food Drive, with Huntsman Corporation, Woodforest National Bank, and Southwestern Energy as gold sponsors. Sponsorship opportunities are still available. All businesses that participate will be highlighted on the food bank’s website.

Montgomery County Food Bank began in 1985 as a door-to-door operation run out of car trunks by a small group of volunteers wanting to serve those in need in their community. Throughout the past 30 years, generous donors and volunteers have built it into an organization capable of distributing over 10 million nutritional pounds of food annually. TheMontgomery County Food Bank also hosts mobile food distributions, offers nutritional education programs, emergency assistance in the time of a disaster or crisis, and provides meal programs for children and senior citizens.
