Read to Me Picture Book Festival Brings Stories, Authors, and Family Fun to The Woodlands Nov. 1

By  |

The joy of reading takes center stage at the Read to Me Picture Book Festival, presented by Reading Is Revolutionary and Powered by Junior League of The Woodlands. Sponsored in part by Lake Creek Academy and taking place on Saturday, November 1, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Deretchin Elementary School, this free community festival invites families to celebrate books, meet authors, and enjoy hands-on activities that spark imagination.

The festival will feature four nationally recognized children’s book authors, interactive story times, robotics demonstrations, nature workshops, arts and crafts, and more. Families will also have the opportunity to collect free resources, participate in activities hosted by local organizations, and connect with community partners who champion literacy and creativity.

“This festival is about the power of story,” said Teresa Kenney, founder of Reading Is Revolutionary and owner of Village Books, an independent bookshop in The Woodlands. “When kids meet authors, hold books in their hands, and experience the magic of storytelling, it creates readers for life. We’re proud to bring this event to Montgomery County as a celebration of literacy, diversity, and community connection.”

Families will have the chance to meet four talented picture book authors, each bringing fresh voices and meaningful stories:

  • Marcus Bridgewater (aka Garden Marcus) follows up his popular and inspiring How to Grow with his first picture book, See Marcus Grow.
  • Alda P. Dobbs, a Pura Belpré Honoree, is the author of The Giving Flower, which weaves legend and nature in a beautiful tale just right for sharing during the holiday season
  • Kari Lavelle, known for her hilariously irreverent Butt or Face picture book series, will introduce her latest title, Super Gross Butts, at the festival.
  • Lindsay Leslie, one of The Woodlands’ favorite authors and creator of Dusk Explorers and So You Want to Build a Library, returns to Read to Me to present her new story, Gus Hearts the Bus.
