YMCA of Greater Houston Launches a Summer of Adventure for Youth Across the Region
The YMCA of Greater Houston is helping children and teens make the most of their summer through programs designed to build confidence, encourage creativity and keep youth active, engaged and connected. From outdoor adventures at YMCA Camp Cullen to leadership development, sports and expanded swim instruction, the nonprofit’s summer offerings provide families with safe, enriching experiences that support personal growth. Research from the American Camp Association shows that summer programs and camps strengthen social skills while creating lifelong memories.
“For families looking for opportunities that keep kids learning, growing and building relationships in positive environments, the YMCA of Greater Houston programs do just that,” said Stephen Ives, president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Houston. “Our programs help kids and teens discover new interests, gain confidence and thrive in a supportive environment. Ultimately, we want every child to feel inspired and empowered long after summer ends.”
The YMCA of Greater Houston’s unique summer programming offers options for young children, youth and teens to continue learning and growing even during the summer months. Many families looking for ways to help their kids make the most of their free time over the summer can feel confident that each program’s structured, developmentally focused experiences support youth growth in welcoming environments. Program highlights include:
- YMCA Camp Cullen – YMCA Camp Cullen is welcoming campers to spend their summer on 500 acres of scenic land near Trinity, Texas, for an adventure-filled summer. The overnight camp has provided youth ages 7–17 with memorable experiences rooted in nature, exploration, and growth for more than 50 years. Known as a destination for campers to build connections and discover new skills through activities such as horseback riding, arts and crafts, water sports, zip lines, adventure courses, and teen specialty camps, Camp Cullen is committed to the well-being and care of all children. YMCA Camp Cullen has been hosting monthly open houses for families to see the place firsthand, learn about safety guidelines and technological advancements that ensure every camper has a safe summer.
- Summer Day Camps – At YMCA Summer Day Camps, children participate in hands-on STEM challenges, creative and performing arts, water safety education, and opportunities to practice teamwork, service, and mindfulness. The dynamic environment opens the door to academic enrichment, literacy activities, nature-based learning, field trips and an array of sports and outdoor games, ensuring each week feels fresh and engaging.
- Y Teen L.I.F.E – Y Teen L.I.F.E. (Leadership, Inspiration, Fellowship and Education) focuses on empowering middle and high school youth to lead with purpose and serve their communities. The program encourages students to identify their goals, strengthen their voices, and gain a deeper understanding of their strengths while being guided by supportive adult mentors. Youth ages 13–15 may also take part in the Leaders in Training (LIT) program, a six-week experiential program that builds leadership skills, social awareness, and confidence, preparing participants for future workforce opportunities.
- Swim Programs & New Swim Model – The YMCA recently launched its new swim model tohelp participants start at the appropriate level and take an important step toward water safety before summer. Lessons are grouped by age to ensure swimmers receive instruction tailored to their skill level, with each stage building skills and confidence. This builds upon existing efforts such as Safety Around Water (SAW), which provides hands-on education and access to water survival skills, and “Phones Down, Eyes Up,” a public service campaign that promoted active, undistracted adult supervision near water. Additionally, the YMCA of Greater Houston is hosting the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson™ on June 25 to raise awareness about water safety and the importance of learning how to swim. Families and children ages 3-12 can join a certified YMCA instructor for a short, guided swim lesson focusing on essential water safety tactics and basic swim skills.
- Youth Sports – Designed for youth ages 3–17, YMCA sports programs introduce children and teens to a variety of recreational and competitive opportunities, including flag football, soccer, volleyball, baseball, and basketball. During the summer, specialized sports camps and clinics provide focused, age-appropriate instruction that allows participants to strengthen their abilities and try new sports. Guided by trained coaches and dedicated volunteers, youth sports programs offer flexible scheduling for families and emphasize positive values such as teamwork, respect, and sportsmanship.
Through camps, sports, leadership programs, and water safety education, the YMCA of Greater Houston continues its commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for youth throughout the summer months. Families are encouraged to register and explore programs to give children and teens a summer filled with adventure, friendship and connection.
