Local Libraries invite all to participate in Summer Reading Program “Unearth A Story” June 1-25
Unearth A StoryTM is this year’s Montgomery County Memorial Library System’s Summer Reading Program theme and there will be digging, dinosaurs and discovery for all ages. Children, preteens, teens, and adults may participate from June 1st through July 25th, 2026 in this program filled with a reading challenge and free events.
“We invite our community to rediscover your MCMLS libraries this summer,” said MCMLS Executive Library Director Dr. Janna Hoglund. “All ages are welcome to participate in fun programs and a reading challenge while reconnecting with all the great services, activities, and opportunities your library provides — innovative technology, countless titles, creative programs, and connections with our team and neighbors.”
There are two parts to the free Summer Reading Program—a self-paced reading component and a variety of events. Educational and entertaining events are available at all seven MCMLS library locations across Montgomery County. Events are free and open to the public during the eight-week program. The reading challenge includes goals that are self-paced with rewards to foster literacy.
Children, teens and adults can choose to read by books or minutes. Reading to each other, listening to audiobooks, and reading articles, newspapers and e-books counts too. Participants may register on the Reader Zone app in May, but cannot begin reading or logging titles until June 1st. They may also choose to pick up a printed reading log at their local library instead of tracking on the Reader Zone app. Once reading goals are reached, participants can show their completion reading logs to their home location, and earn their reward for reading!
Registering for reading is not required to attend events. Some events may require free tickets or pre-registration due to limited space or supplies. All MCMLS Library events, programs, and classes are free and open to the public. If any individual requires an accommodation to participate in the library events, programs, or classes, please contact the host library location at least three days before the program/event.

All seven locations of the library system are hosting Summer Reading Program Kickoff Parties to celebrate its beginning. The parties take place on the following dates:

In addition to the kickoff celebrations, the libraries will have exciting special events for children, teens and adults throughout the weeks, including magicians, bubble shows, variety shows with song and dance, art, crafts, puppet shows, games, movies, book clubs, storytellers, wildlife, coding and scavenger hunts, henna art, sewing and knitting, and pizza parties. The community is welcome to attend events at any location, but must choose a home location for the reading challenge.
The theme and slogan, Unearth a Storytm, focusing on dinosaurs, paleontology, and archaeology is part of the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP), chosen by member libraries, including the Texas State Library and Archives Commission, across the country due to high interest by all ages. The CSLP reminds us that whether readers are digging into a good book, uncovering hidden histories, or exploring the past, the slogan underscores the joy of discovery that reading brings. It also emphasizes that every person and every community has stories waiting to be found and shared—through books, programs, and local knowledge.
